YOUR STORY MATTERS AND YOUR VOICE SHOULD BE HEARD

Elmiron Lawsuit Lawyers Available

Have you taken Elmiron and suffered vision problems or other serious side effects as a result? Since 1996, millions of Americans have been prescribed Elmiron, the brand name for pentosan polysulfate sodium (PPS), to treat interstitial cystitis (IC), a condition that causes bladder pain and pressure. However, evidence suggests that Elmiron causes serious eye conditions, including blindness.

Maculopathy, which involves the degeneration of the macula, located in the retina of the eye, has been one of the most severe side effects of Elmiron. Maculopathy’s symptoms include blurred vision, difficulty seeing close objects, dark spots, and trouble focusing. The condition can eventually lead to total blindness. If you have experienced maculopathy symptoms, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

For years, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Elmiron and a Johnson & Johnson subsidiary, failed to warn the public about these risks. Millions of people take a drug that may one day cause them to go blind, and countless others may have already suffered devastating side effects. Victims throughout the United States are currently filing lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

These lawsuits allege that the drug manufacturer did not disclose the link between Elmiron and eye problems to the public. As a result, many with IC and other health issues took Elmiron without knowing the risks. In June 2020, Janssen Pharmaceuticals finally updated Elmiron’s label to warn about potential vision problems. Unfortunately, this warning came too late for many victims.

With the help of an experienced attorney, you can join the fight against Janssen Pharmaceuticals and recover the compensation you need and deserve. It’s important that you get started on your lawsuit as soon as possible. At Lawsuit Authority, we are prepared to connect you with the best lawyer for your unique claim. We will help you locate a highly skilled and compassionate attorney who will collect evidence and build a strong case on your behalf. Most of these lawsuits are mass torts, meaning you will likely join a team of people fighting against Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

Mass torts allow you and others who have been injured by Elmiron to jointly file a lawsuit against the company that developed, marketed, and sold the drug. A successful mass tort lawsuit means all victims involved in the lawsuit will be fairly compensated while also holding the at-fault party accountable. One of the aims of mass torts is to deter other companies from future negligence. Anyone can join regardless of where they live in the United States.

What is Elmiron?

Elmiron is a type of blood thinner used to treat a condition known as interstitial cystitis (IC), or bladder pain syndrome. Elmiron is also used to treat osteoarthritis. While doctors are not exactly sure how Elmiron interacts with the body, the drug is believed to work by attaching to the bladder wall and providing a buffer to irritating substances. This is how the drug may curb bladder pain and pressure. Elmiron is the only drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat IC.

People often take Elmiron for many years. Patients prescribed with Elmiron usually receive three 100 mg doses daily. Many report an improvement in their bladder symptoms within a month. In many cases, doctors have encouraged patients to remain on Elmiron for a minimum of six months. Pain generally diminishes during this time, as does the urinary frequency. For years, Elmiron’s side effects were considered relatively mild, including minor gastrointestinal disturbances like diarrhea and stomach cramps and reversible hair loss.

Although the FDA has approved the drug since 1995, studies have indicated that irreversible visual conditions have been linked to its long-term use. Elmiron lawsuits against Janssen Pharmaceuticals seek compensation for the harm the drug has caused to users.

What Are the Side Effects of Taking Elmiron?

Common side effects of Elmiron include:

  • Hair loss
  • Diarrhea
  • Blood in stool
  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Pain
  • Upset stomach
  • Dizziness
  • Sore throat

In addition to these common side effects, weight gain and edema can occur. When taking Elmiron, it’s important to remember that this medication is an anticoagulant and functions as a blood thinner. Some of the rarer side effects include gum and rectal hemorrhaging and bruising.

The most serious dangers of Elmiron have been primarily connected to different types of vision problems, most notably maculopathy. Maculopathy affects a part of the eye called the macula, the retina’s central area. According to the Review of Ophthalmology, a 2019 study looked at 35 cases of people who experienced eye damage after taking Elmiron. The study found that patients who had taken Elmiron and suffered eye issues were between 37 and 79 and had taken the drug for 3-22 years. The most common symptoms were blurred vision while reading (48.6%), difficulty adjusting to nighttime or dark lighting (48.6%), and distorted vision (11.4%). The study patients had been suffering from symptoms for 1-9 years.

Eye problems and side effects that victims may be able to claim damages for in an Elmiron lawsuit include:

  • Bilateral blindness
  • Blurred vision
  • Decreased night vision
  • Difficulty reading
  • Distorted vision
  • Eye pain
  • Macular retinopathy (any condition or disease of the macula)
  • Macular/pattern dystrophy (deterioration of the macula leading to vision loss)
  • Malattia leventinese (a form of macular degeneration that results in irreversible visual loss)
  • Metamorphopsia (causes linear objects, such as lines to appear rounded or curvy)
  • Pigmentary maculopathy (when a tissue deposit or lesion on the macula affects central vision)
  • Retinopathy (disease of the retina)
  • Scotoma (partial loss of vision or blind spot)
  • Unilateral blindness
  • Vision disturbances
  • Vision loss
